What AI telemarketing is, and the line it must not cross
Telemarketing is calling people to promote or sell something. AI telemarketing hands those calls to an AI voice agent that speaks the offer, answers questions, records interest and passes warm customers to your team. The technology changes who is on the line; it does not change who may be called.
In India that distinction matters more than in most markets. The regulator, TRAI, treats unsolicited commercial communication as a consumer-protection issue, and a promotional call to someone who has blocked such calls is a violation whether a person or a machine made it. A telemarketing plan that starts with the technology and skips the list is a plan to be blocked.
The rules in plain terms
TRAI's Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2018 (TCCCP) govern commercial calls and messages. Businesses must register on the DLT platform. Customers set preferences, including blocking promotional communication, by calling or texting 1909, and that preference is enforced through the DND or NCPR register. Promotional calls may reach only those who have not blocked the category or who have given consent.
In 2024 TRAI directed telecom operators to act against promotional voice calls from unregistered senders over PRI, SIP and similar lines, with repeat offenders liable to be blacklisted, and promotional calls are expected to come from the 140-series numbers assigned to registered telemarketers. Treat this page as a working summary rather than legal advice, and check current TRAI circulars with your counsel.
| Call type | Example | DND applies | What you should hold |
|---|---|---|---|
| Promotional | A festival offer, a new scheme, a cross-sell | Yes, unless the customer consented | Consent record or DND-scrubbed list, registered sender |
| Service or transactional | Order confirmation, EMI due reminder, appointment confirmation | Treated differently from promotion | A genuine relationship with the customer and the right classification |
| Cold prospecting | A purchased or scraped list | Yes | Usually the wrong list; high risk of complaints |
| Inbound | Customer rings your number | Not applicable | Disclose recording and handle data carefully |
What actually works in AI telemarketing
The campaigns that survive are those where the customer already knows you. A cold list buys blocks, complaints and a damaged number. A list of past customers, enquirers and lapsed members buys conversations.
- —Reactivation: calling customers who have not ordered or visited in months with a specific reason to return.
- —Renewals and upsell: insurance renewal, membership renewal, vehicle service reminders with an added offer.
- —Festival and season offers to existing customers: jewellery before Akshaya Tritiya, appliances around Diwali, school-uniform sales in April.
- —Event and webinar invitations to people who registered before.
- —Enquiry follow-up: ringing the person who asked about a product last week, which is far closer to service than to cold marketing.
How an Outpero telemarketing campaign runs
- 01Upload a CSV of contacts you have consent or an existing relationship with.
- 02Set the calling window, retry rules and callback handling; the campaign screens the list against DND.
- 03Write the AI employee's script: who you are, the one offer, the two or three questions, and the exit.
- 04Choose Standard or Premium voices and the language for each segment.
- 05Run it. Each answered contact gets an AI conversation; interested ones can be transferred to your team or sent a WhatsApp message.
- 06Review recordings, transcripts, summaries and captured fields, and export to CSV or your webhook.
Hear it on a real call before you read further?
A fixed announcement with no conversation, such as a festival greeting or a closure notice, is a different tool: Outpero's voice broadcast plays one message to a list and is billed at a lower rate than AI minutes. Use AI conversation for offers that need a reply.
Languages: a regional offer in the customer's language
A promotion in the wrong language is a promotion nobody hears. A jewellery chain in Coimbatore should speak Tamil, a Pune home-appliance dealer Marathi, a Kochi car-service centre Malayalam. Outpero speaks Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and Indian English, switching to English the moment the customer does, at the same per-minute price in each.
What AI telemarketing costs, with arithmetic
Outpero has no setup fee or subscription. Standard is ₹5 per connected minute and Premium ₹6.8, from prepaid credits at 1 credit = ₹1, and a dedicated +91 number is ₹649 a month with one channel included. Extra channels, each one more simultaneous call, are ₹649 a month. Unanswered calls are not billed. All prices exclude 18% GST.
| Campaign | Working | Cost (before GST) |
|---|---|---|
| 2,000 consented customers, 40% answer, 1.5 minutes each | 800 x 1.5 x ₹5 = ₹6,000 | ₹6,000 |
| Same on Premium voices | 800 x 1.5 x ₹6.8 = ₹8,160 | ₹8,160 |
| Number and 2 extra channels for the month | ₹649 + 2 x ₹649 | ₹1,947 |
| One human telemarketer for the month, for reference | ₹15,000 to ₹25,000; ₹18,000 reference | ₹18,000 |
The answer rate and call length here are assumptions to replace with your own history. Speed also scales with channels: each channel works through roughly 55 dials an hour, so 2,000 dials on 3 channels take around 12 hours of calling time.
How to evaluate an AI telemarketing vendor
- —Ask whether the calling line is DLT-registered and how promotional versus service calls are handled.
- —Ask how DND screening is done and whether it covers the whole bulk list.
- —Check calling windows, opt-out handling and whether a do-not-call list can be maintained.
- —Insist on recordings and transcripts, which are your evidence in a complaint.
- —Test the script on a small, consented batch before any large run.
- —Be wary of anyone promising a conversion rate; results depend on your offer and list, and Outpero does not publish conversion figures.
When AI telemarketing is the wrong move
If the only list you have is purchased or scraped, the problem is the list, not the calling tool. AI makes a bad list fail faster. Build consent first through your website, point of sale or WhatsApp, and keep an honest record of it. Outpero is also not the right fit for complex negotiated sales where a human should lead from the first minute.
