What a conversational IVR is
A traditional IVR plays a recorded menu and listens for keypresses: Hindi ke liye 2 dabaiye, for order status press 1, for complaints press 3. Callers have to translate their problem into the business's menu structure, and the ones who cannot usually press 0 or hang up.
An AI IVR removes the menu. It asks one open question — how can I help — and uses speech recognition and a language model to understand the answer. The caller says the order was not delivered, and the system goes straight to that, in the language the caller used.
Press-1 IVR vs AI IVR, side by side
| Traditional DTMF IVR | AI IVR (Outpero inbound agent) | |
|---|---|---|
| How the caller navigates | Keypresses through a fixed tree | Speaks naturally, can interrupt |
| Language selection | A menu option per language | Chosen language, with automatic switching to English when the caller switches |
| Handles unexpected requests | No; falls to a default branch | Answers from its instructions or captures the request |
| Completes tasks | Only pre-built flows | Books slots, reads or writes a spreadsheet, calls your API, sends WhatsApp |
| Routes to live agent queues | Yes, core feature | Transfers to your team when a person should take it; otherwise flags for callback |
| Change the flow | Re-record prompts, re-build tree | Edit written instructions |
| Output | Call detail record, key path | Recording, transcript, summary, sentiment, captured fields |
How an AI IVR works under the hood
- 01The call connects and the agent greets the caller with one open question.
- 02Speech recognition turns what the caller says into text as they speak, and voice activity detection tells the system when they have finished — or lets them barge in.
- 03A language model works out intent and the details that matter, such as an order ID, a branch or a date, and decides what to do next under the instructions you wrote.
- 04If the answer needs live data, the agent calls your API or reads a spreadsheet; if it needs an appointment, it books one.
- 05The reply is spoken back in the same voice. Outpero's end-to-end latency, from the caller stopping to the agent speaking, is 0.8 to 1.3 seconds on average.
- 06The call is logged with recording, transcript and summary, and sent to your webhook.
Why Indian businesses replace press-1 menus
Menus are especially painful in India because callers code-switch, use local names for products, and frequently call from a feature phone while travelling. A ten-option menu read in Hindi and then English loses half its audience by option four. A conversational IVR lets a caller in Hyderabad say order cancel cheyyali in Tenglish and be understood.
- —Hospitals and diagnostic labs: departments, doctor schedules, report status and home-collection bookings, without a menu per department.
- —E-commerce and D2C brands: order status, return windows and COD questions answered from a live lookup.
- —Education: admission enquiries, fee structures and counselling bookings for schools, colleges and coaching chains.
- —Real estate developers: project enquiries routed by what the caller asks, not which digit they pressed, with site visits booked.
- —Service businesses: complaint logging with structured fields instead of a voicemail box behind option 3.
Languages
Outpero's agent speaks Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and Indian English, and switches to English the moment the caller does. That switching is between the conversation's language and English, so if one number serves large groups of both Tamil and Hindi callers, test how that works for your traffic before removing the language menu entirely.

Cost
Outpero has no setup fee, no monthly base fee and no contract. Calls are billed per connected minute from prepaid credits — ₹5 or ₹6.8 by voice tier — and a dedicated number is ₹649/month. Because an AI IVR resolves calls rather than routing them, the comparison that matters is cost per resolved call, not cost per minute of menu.
Metrics to track
Measure containment rate (calls fully handled without a person), first-call resolution, average handle time and the share of callers asking for a human. A good conversational IVR should raise containment without the callback queue quietly growing; read the flagged summaries weekly.
A sensible migration is gradual. Pull a month of call recordings or IVR key-path reports, list the ten reasons people call, and write instructions for the top five first. Run the AI agent on after-hours traffic for two weeks, read every flagged call, then widen it to daytime calls once the flagged share stops falling.
Compliance
Inbound IVR calls are initiated by the customer, so TRAI's DND rules do not apply to answering them. Recording disclosure and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 do. Lenders, insurers and other regulated entities should also check their own regulator's grievance and outsourcing requirements — RBI and IRDAI both have them — before automating complaint lines.
How to evaluate an AI IVR vendor
- —Test with your real callers' phrasing, including code-switched sentences and product nicknames.
- —Ask how it fetches live data — custom API, spreadsheet, or nothing.
- —Ask what happens when intent is unclear: does it ask a clarifying question or guess.
- —Check whether the platform also provides agent queues and routing if you need them; contact-centre platforms such as Exotel and Ozonetel do.
- —Confirm uptime commitments; Outpero offers a 99.9% uptime SLA.
Where a traditional IVR still wins
Outpero can transfer a call to your team, but it is not a queue-routing system. If your IVR's main job is distributing calls across a team of support agents, or it collects card or OTP input by keypad for payments, keep that system and use an AI agent for the self-service and after-hours share of calls.
