What conversational AI means
Conversational AI is the umbrella term for systems that understand what a person says, decide what to say back, and keep track of the conversation as it goes. A website chatbot, a WhatsApp assistant and an AI voice agent on a phone call are all conversational AI. What separates them from older automation is that the customer can answer in their own words, change their mind, or ask something out of order.
Older systems — IVR menus, keyword chatbots, recorded voice broadcasts — follow a fixed tree. They work when the customer's need fits a button. They fail the moment someone says “I already paid, why am I getting this call?”, which is exactly when a business most needs the system to cope.
Chat, IVR and voice agents compared
| Rule-based IVR | Text chatbot | Conversational voice agent | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How the customer responds | Presses keys or says one word | Types, often in English or Roman-script Hinglish | Speaks naturally, in their own language |
| Handles off-script questions | No | Sometimes | Yes, within what it has been briefed on |
| Reaches customers who do not open apps | Only on inbound | No | Yes, it calls them |
| Works for low-literacy users | Partly | Poorly | Well |
| Typical Indian use | Banking and telecom menus | Order status, FAQs | Lead calling, reminders, confirmations, surveys |
| Main weakness | Rigid and frustrating | Ignored if it needs typing | Costs per minute; needs a good script and good latency |
Why voice matters more in India
India runs on phone calls. A buyer who fills in a Meta lead ad expects a call, not an email. A patient in Madurai would rather answer a phone than type a reply in Tamil script. Census 2011 recorded Hindi as the first language of about 528 million people, followed by Bengali, Marathi, Telugu and Tamil, and most of those speakers move between their language and English without thinking about it.
That makes Indian conversational AI harder than the English-only version. The system has to recognise Hinglish or Tenglish mid-sentence, cope with background noise on a two-wheeler, and respond with the right level of politeness — “ji”, “garu”, “sir” — or it sounds foreign to the person on the line.
How a conversational voice agent works
- 01Speech recognition (ASR) turns the caller's audio into text as they speak.
- 02Endpointing decides when the caller has actually finished, rather than just paused.
- 03A language model reads the conversation so far, your instructions and any data it can look up, and decides the reply or the action — booking a slot, updating a sheet, calling an API.
- 04Text-to-speech (TTS) speaks the reply in a natural voice, streamed so the caller hears it quickly.
- 05Barge-in detection stops the agent talking the moment the caller interrupts, and the loop starts again.
The total time for that loop is what callers feel as latency. Outpero's end-to-end figure is 0.8 to 1.3 seconds on average from the caller stopping to the agent speaking. Slower than that and people start saying “hello?” into the silence.

Where conversational AI earns its keep in Indian businesses
- —Calling new leads from ads and portals like IndiaMART, JustDial and 99acres within seconds.
- —Appointment reminders for clinics, diagnostic labs and salons, with rescheduling on the same call.
- —Cash-on-delivery confirmation for ecommerce and D2C brands before dispatch.
- —Admission follow-ups for coaching institutes and colleges during peak season.
- —Feedback and NPS surveys where a call gets far more answers than an SMS link.
- —Payment and renewal reminders for insurance, loans and subscriptions.
How Outpero applies conversational AI
Outpero is an AI employee for phone calls. Its voice engine, Swara, holds live conversations in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and Indian English, switching to English when the caller does. It holds conversations in three ways: instant lead calling, which dials a new enquiry within 30 seconds; bulk campaigns from a CSV with calling windows, retries and DND screening; and inbound calls, where it answers your business number 24/7, handles the enquiry, qualifies it and books the appointment. A fourth mode, voice broadcast, plays one fixed message to a list — useful for announcements, but not conversational AI.
During a call it can book a calendar slot, read or write a spreadsheet, call your API or send a WhatsApp message. After the call you get the recording, transcript, summary, sentiment and custom fields in the dashboard and at your webhook.
Cost and compliance
Outpero has no setup fee and no monthly base fee; talk time is ₹5 or ₹6.8 per connected minute depending on the voice tier, paid from prepaid credits. Any conversational AI that makes calls in India must respect TRAI's TCCCP 2018 rules — DLT registration and DND preferences for promotional calls — and the DPDP Act 2023 on personal data. Lenders also need to follow RBI guidance on recovery calls, including calling only between 8 am and 7 pm.
How to evaluate conversational AI vendors in India
- —Test in the language your customers use, not just English, and mix languages mid-sentence.
- —Measure the pause after you stop speaking; anything that feels like a walkie-talkie will annoy callers.
- —Interrupt it and see whether it stops.
- —Check what you receive after the call and whether it reaches your CRM without manual work.
- —Ask for pricing in rupees per connected minute and whether there is a setup fee or lock-in.
Limits worth knowing
Conversational AI is not a substitute for a trained person on sensitive conversations such as a medical diagnosis, a bereavement or a dispute. It needs a clear brief to stay accurate, and it will only speak the languages its vendor actually supports — Outpero does not yet cover Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi or Odia. For a team that wants text-only help on a website, a chatbot may be the cheaper fit.
