What an AI calling app is, and what the word app hides
An AI calling app lets a business hand phone calls to an AI voice agent instead of a person. The agent dials a new enquiry, works through a list, or answers your business number, holds a spoken conversation, and writes up the outcome. You manage it from a screen; you do not sit on the call.
Indian buyers search for an app, but three quite different products hide behind that word. Mixing them up is the commonest way to buy the wrong tool, so it is worth separating them before comparing prices.
| What you may actually be buying | What it does | Who talks to the customer | Fits when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dialer app for your staff | Shows a list, taps to call, logs the call and a note | A human telecaller | You already have a team and want them to dial faster |
| Cloud telephony app | Gives you numbers, IVR menus, routing, recordings | A human, after a menu | You run a call centre and need the plumbing |
| AI calling app | Places and answers calls itself, holds the conversation, captures the result | The AI agent | The calls are repetitive and speed or coverage is the problem |
Outpero is the third kind. It is a web app you open in a browser, not an installable phone dialer for your staff. If you want your own people to tap and dial from their phones, that is a different category, covered in the telecalling software guide linked below.
What happens on a call
- 01A trigger arrives: a Meta or Google lead form, a website form, a CRM change, a row in an uploaded CSV, or a customer ringing your business number.
- 02The AI employee dials within 30 seconds for a new lead, or answers the inbound call at any hour.
- 03It speaks in the customer's language and switches to English the moment the caller does, in the same voice.
- 04It follows your instructions: qualify, answer questions, confirm an order, book a slot in a real calendar, or send a WhatsApp message.
- 05When a person should take over, it transfers the call to your team.
- 06Afterwards you get the recording, transcript, summary, sentiment and the custom fields you asked it to capture, in the dashboard and on your webhook.
What to look for in an AI calling app
Feature lists in this category look identical. The differences that matter in India are narrower and easier to test than the marketing suggests.
- —Indian languages that hold up on a live call: ask for Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada or Malayalam, not a long language menu where most entries are text-only. Check that it copes with mid-sentence English.
- —An Indian calling line: a +91 number that is DLT-registered, with DND screening on bulk campaigns, not a foreign number that customers decline.
- —Response speed: a lead called in 30 seconds is a different product from one called next morning. Also check conversational latency; Outpero runs at 0.8 to 1.3 seconds on average from the caller stopping to the agent speaking.
- —Rupee pricing you can add up: per-minute, prepaid, no setup fee, and a clear answer on whether unanswered calls are billed (on Outpero they are not).
- —What you get after the call: recording, transcript, summary and fields, with CSV export and a webhook, so the call result lands in your own system.
- —Concurrency you can buy: how many calls can run at once, and what extra capacity costs.
- —A way to test with real calls before you commit any money.
Where Indian businesses use an AI calling app
- —Real estate: calling 99acres, MagicBricks and Housing.com enquiries before the next agent does.
- —Clinics and diagnostic labs: appointment confirmations, reminders and after-hours call answering.
- —Schools, colleges and coaching centres: admission enquiry follow-up and fee reminders.
- —E-commerce and D2C: cash-on-delivery order confirmation and abandoned-cart recovery.
- —Lenders and NBFCs: EMI due-date reminders and loan application follow-up.
- —Insurance agents: renewal calls and quote follow-up.
- —B2B sellers on IndiaMART and JustDial: ringing a lead while the buyer is still comparing suppliers.
Languages: the part most apps get wrong
Hear it on a real call before you read further?
A caller in Coimbatore, Nashik or Kochi does not speak textbook language. They speak their language with English nouns dropped in: pincode, EMI, appointment, site visit. An app built English-first and translated afterwards tends to stumble exactly here. Outpero positions itself as a specialist in regional-language voice AI, with seven live languages at the same per-minute price in each.
नमस्ते, मैं Sunrise Homes से बात कर रही हूँ। आपने कल हमारे Whitefield वाले project के बारे में enquiry की थी, तो site visit के लिए Saturday या Sunday में से कौन सा time ठीक रहेगा?
What an AI calling app costs, with the arithmetic
Outpero has no setup fee and no monthly subscription. You pay prepaid credits at 1 credit = ₹1 for connected talk time only: Standard is ₹5 per minute and Premium is ₹6.8 per minute. A dedicated +91 business number is ₹649 per month and includes one channel; each extra channel, meaning one more simultaneous call, is ₹649 per month. All prices exclude 18% GST.
| Scenario | Working | Monthly cost (before GST) |
|---|---|---|
| 300 answered lead calls, 2 minutes each, Standard | 300 x 2 x ₹5 = ₹3,000, plus ₹649 for the number | ₹3,649 |
| Same calls on Premium voices | 300 x 2 x ₹6.8 = ₹4,080, plus ₹649 | ₹4,729 |
| Add 2 extra channels for 3 calls at once | 2 x ₹649 = ₹1,298 on top | ₹4,947 on Standard |
| One human telecaller, for reference | ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month; ₹18,000 is a fair mid-point | ₹18,000, one shift, one call at a time |
These are worked examples built on assumed call volumes, not a quote. Your cost follows connected minutes, so a short, well-scripted call is the cheapest lever you have. New accounts get 50 free credits with no card, which is about ten Standard minutes of real calls.
Compliance an app cannot wave away
Indian calling is regulated by TRAI under the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2018. Businesses making commercial calls register on the DLT platform, and promotional calls may only reach people who have consented or have not blocked promotional calls through DND. An AI voice does not change these rules; it only makes it easier to break them at speed.
- —Check that the calling line is DLT-registered and that bulk campaigns screen against DND.
- —Keep your own consent record for the list you upload. The app cannot create consent you do not have.
- —Have the agent say who is calling and for which business within the first sentence.
- —Call within sensible daytime windows; Outpero lets you set calling windows, retries and callbacks.
How to evaluate before you commit
- 01Sign up and use the 50 free credits; no card is needed.
- 02Create an AI employee with your real script, not a demo script.
- 03Call a handful of numbers you control, including a colleague who will switch to English mid-call and interrupt.
- 04Read the transcript and summary of each call. Judge them as you would a new telecaller's notes.
- 05Check the credits each call used, then project a month from that real figure.
When an AI calling app is the wrong tool
Keep humans on calls that need judgement, negotiation or empathy, such as a high-value loan restructuring or a distressed customer. An AI calling app earns its place on repetitive, high-volume, time-sensitive calls: first contact, reminders, confirmations and enquiry handling. It also cannot fix a bad list or an offer nobody wants.
