What is Hinglish and can AI understand it?
Hinglish is the everyday mix of Hindi and English that most urban Indians speak, where English words and whole phrases sit inside Hindi sentences. AI voice agents built for India can understand and speak it. Outpero's Hindi agents hold Hinglish conversations on live calls and switch fully into English, mid-sentence, whenever the caller does.
Hinglish, defined
Hinglish is not broken Hindi or broken English. It is a stable way of speaking with its own rules, used at work, on television and in advertising across India. 'Mera order cancel ho gaya, refund kab tak aayega?' is a perfectly ordinary customer sentence.
Linguists call this code-switching or code-mixing. In Hinglish the grammar is usually Hindi, with the verb at the end and Hindi postpositions, while many nouns and sometimes whole clauses are English.
Typical Hinglish on a business call
- —'Aapka appointment confirm hai, kal 4 baje.'
- —'Main thoda busy hoon, can you call me in the evening?'
- —'EMI kitni banegi agar down payment two lakh ho?'
- —'Delivery address change karna hai.'
Why older systems failed at it
Speech recognition used to be built one language at a time. A Hindi model heard 'refund' as a Hindi-sounding near miss; an English model could not parse 'kab tak aayega'. IVR menus dodged the problem by asking callers to press 1 for Hindi and 2 for English, which matches nobody's actual speech.
Current models are trained on mixed speech, so they can follow a sentence that moves between languages. The harder parts that remain are English words said the Hindi way, such as 'iskool' or 'fees jama', and Hindi numbers inside English sentences.
How Outpero handles Hinglish
An Outpero agent set up in Hindi speaks natural Hinglish when the script is written that way: Hindi grammar, English product words. When the caller switches to English, the agent follows mid-sentence in the same voice. Keep EMI, booking, site visit and refund in English in your script. The same pattern exists for the other live languages: Tenglish, Tanglish, Kanglish, Manglish and Marathi mixed with English.
The full transcript of each call shows exactly what the caller said in both languages, so you can check how the agent handled a mixed conversation and adjust the script.

Follow-up questions
Is Hinglish only spoken in North India?
+
No. Hinglish is heard wherever Hindi works as a common language at work, including Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, where many migrants and professionals use it to talk across language groups. In Tamil Nadu and Kerala it is much less common, and callers there usually expect Tamil, Malayalam or English instead.
