Can AI pronounce Indian names correctly?
Usually for common names, but not always. Modern Indian-language voices say names like Priya, Venkatesh or Mohammed correctly, yet unusual spellings, initials and names written in Roman letters from another language can come out wrong. Clean your lead data, test names from your own list, and let the agent fall back to a polite 'sir' or 'madam' when a name is uncertain.
Why names are hard
Most lead lists store names in Roman letters, and Roman spelling of Indian names is inconsistent. Lakshmi, Laxmi and Luxmi are the same name. Bhaskar and Baskar differ between North and South. The Tamil name Azhagu contains a sound, zha, that English spelling cannot show.
The voice engine has to guess the pronunciation from that spelling, and guesses go wrong in predictable places.
Common failure points
- —Initials, common in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh: 'K. Srinivasa Rao' or 'R. Lakshmi'.
- —Names with Portuguese or English spellings: D'Souza, Xavier and Fernandes in Goa and Mangaluru.
- —Doubled or silent letters: Bhatt, Sreeja, Thakkar.
- —Lead-form junk: 'Raju bhai', 'Rahul123', all capitals, or a company name in the name field.
- —Honorific mismatch: calling a Telugu caller 'Rao ji', or addressing a Marathi elder without 'saheb' or 'tai'.
How to reduce errors
- 01Clean the name field before upload: remove numbers, symbols and company names, and keep first names only.
- 02Use first names. 'Venkatesh garu' is safer than an initial plus a long surname.
- 03Build respectful address into the script: 'ji' in Hindi, 'garu' in Telugu, 'sir' or 'madam' everywhere.
- 04Test a sample of the hardest names from your list and listen to the recordings.
- 05If a name is consistently mispronounced, greet without it rather than risk getting it wrong.
How Outpero handles it
Outpero's Swara voice engine speaks the name in the same voice and language as the rest of the call, so a name inside a Telugu greeting is said as part of a Telugu sentence. Every call has a recording and a transcript, which makes a mispronounced name easy to find and fix before the next batch goes out.
Place names deserve the same care. Localities such as Kukatpally, Thiruvananthapuram or Ghatkopar come up when callers give addresses or choose a branch, so include the ones your business uses in a quick test call and listen to how the agent says them back.

Follow-up questions
Should the AI agent use the caller's name at all?
+
Yes, once, in the greeting, if the name field is clean. Hearing their own name tells a lead the call is about their enquiry and not spam. Repeating it sounds scripted, and a mispronounced name in the first sentence does more harm than a polite 'sir' or 'madam', so drop any names you are unsure of.
