Can AI voice agents speak Punjabi?
Some platforms list Punjabi, but Outpero does not support it. Outpero's agents speak Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and English. In Punjab, Chandigarh and Delhi, many Punjabi speakers take business calls comfortably in Hindi or English, so an Outpero agent can work for those callers. For Punjabi-only callers, especially in rural Punjab, use a human or another vendor.
Punjabi and the calling market
Census 2011 counted about 33 million first-language Punjabi speakers in India, concentrated in Punjab, with large communities in Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh. Phone-based selling is strong in Ludhiana's manufacturing and hosiery, Jalandhar's sports goods, Amritsar's tourism, and the study-abroad and immigration consultancies across Mohali, Jalandhar and Amritsar.
What works today
- —Hindi for most urban callers in Ludhiana, Mohali, Chandigarh and Patiala, who move between Punjabi, Hindi and English comfortably.
- —English for study-abroad, IELTS and visa enquiries, where students and parents expect English terms.
- —Human callers for Punjabi-first segments: rural Doaba and Malwa, older farmers and agri-input dealers.
Why Punjabi is hard to fake
Punjabi is a tonal language, unusual among Indian languages, so pitch can change a word's meaning. A Hindi voice reading Punjabi words gets the tones wrong and sounds foreign immediately. Speech recognition also has to handle Majhi, Doabi and Malwai varieties and frequent mixing with Hindi and English.
Study-abroad consultants: a good fit anyway
Study-abroad and immigration consultancies are among Punjab's busiest calling markets, and those conversations are largely English, or Hindi with English terms: IELTS band, offer letter, visa file. An Outpero agent in English or Hindi can call new enquiries within 30 seconds, check intake, country and test score, and book a counselling slot in your calendar.
Every call returns a recording, transcript, summary and the fields you asked for, such as target country or IELTS score, in the dashboard and on your webhook.
Recorded Punjabi announcements
Voice broadcast is a separate Outpero mode in which one fixed message is played to everyone on a list and the call ends, with no conversation. Upload an audio file recorded in Punjabi and that is what callers hear, which suits mandi-season offers or service reminders. Synthesised broadcast voices only cover the seven live languages.
If Punjabi coverage is non-negotiable, choose a vendor that holds a convincing live Punjabi call with you before you sign up, and keep Outpero for the Hindi and English share of your leads.
