Outpero

Should my AI agent speak English or the local language?

Short answer

Use the language your callers would choose with a human telecaller. For most consumer calls outside metro professional circles, that means the local language with English words mixed in, not pure English. English suits B2B, IT, study-abroad and premium segments. Outpero agents start in the language you pick and switch to English mid-sentence when the caller does, so English speakers are rarely lost.

A simple rule

Pick the language your best human telecaller would open with for that list. If your team in Coimbatore opens in Tamil, the AI should too. If your sales team in Gurugram opens in English for SaaS demos, keep English.

When the local language wins

  • —Consumer leads from Meta and Google ads, where many people are more comfortable in their own language.
  • —Tier 2 and tier 3 cities such as Madurai, Nashik, Hubballi, Warangal, Thrissur and Kanpur.
  • —Healthcare, loans and insurance, where trust matters and a misunderstanding is costly.
  • —Older callers and parents, for example on admission follow-ups.

When English wins

  • —B2B and SaaS demo booking, where the buyer works in English all day.
  • —Study-abroad consultants calling students about IELTS, visas and universities.
  • —Pan-India lists where you cannot predict the caller's language.
  • —Premium real estate and wealth management in metro cities.

Why the choice matters less than it used to

Because Outpero's agents switch to English the moment the caller does, opening in the local language costs little with English speakers: they reply in English and the call carries on in English. The reverse is riskier. An English-only opening can lose a Tamil- or Telugu-first caller in the first ten seconds.

Test it, do not guess

Split a list in two, run one campaign in the local language and one in English, and compare connected minutes, completed calls and the qualification fields you capture. Both campaigns can run side by side on separate channels, each extra channel being ₹649/month, so an A/B test is easy to set up.

Keep in mind that Outpero's local languages are Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada and Malayalam. For Gujarati, Bengali or Punjabi callers, English or Hindi is the only choice Outpero offers today, and some of those callers are better served by a human.
