Can an AI calling agent give medical advice to patients?
No, and it should not. An AI calling agent is not a registered medical practitioner, and under the NMC's Telemedicine Practice Guidelines diagnosis and prescription belong to one. What it can do safely is book and confirm appointments, remind patients about follow-ups and tests, read out instructions the clinic has approved, and log any clinical question for a doctor to call back.
Where the line sits
The useful test is whether a sentence could change a patient's treatment. Telling a patient their follow-up is due on the 14th does not. Telling them their sugar reading sounds fine, or that they can stop an antibiotic early, does. The first kind is administrative and safe to automate. The second is medical advice and must come from a doctor.
| Safe for the AI agent | Must go to a clinician |
|---|---|
| Booking, rescheduling and confirming appointments | Interpreting symptoms or test results |
| Reminding about follow-up visits and pending tests | Changing, starting or stopping medicines |
| Reading the clinic's approved fasting or preparation instructions | Deciding whether a case is urgent |
| Post-visit feedback and satisfaction questions | Answering 'is this normal' questions |
How to brief the agent
Outpero's agent works from the instructions and knowledge you give it. A clinic should state plainly that it must not give medical opinions, and tell it exactly what to say instead: that a doctor or nurse will call back, and that in an emergency the patient should go to the nearest hospital or call 108. The call summary then flags the question so the clinical team sees it first.
Prepared instructions are fine when they come from the clinic. A diagnostic lab can have the agent repeat its own fasting instructions for a lipid profile, because the lab wrote and approved them. The agent is reading, not deciding.
Privacy is part of the same discipline
Health information is personal data under the DPDP Act 2023. Keep the agent's questions to what the booking needs, avoid reading diagnoses aloud when someone else may have answered the phone, and confirm the patient's identity before discussing appointment details. Every call is recorded and transcribed, which gives the clinic an audit trail of exactly what was said.
Why this still saves real time
Front-desk teams at busy clinics spend much of the day on calls that need no medical knowledge at all: confirmations, reschedules, reminders and directions. Moving those to an agent leaves nurses and doctors with only the calls that need them.

Follow-up questions
What if a patient describes an emergency on the call?
+
The agent should be briefed to stop the routine script, tell the patient to go to the nearest emergency department or call 108, and flag the call. It should not try to assess the situation. The summary and recording then reach the clinic team straight away through your webhook, so a staff member can follow up personally.
