AI Calls for Upsell and Cross-Sell
Upsell and cross-sell calls with an AI voice agent reach existing customers with one relevant next offer — an extended warranty after a vehicle purchase, a top-up after a health policy, an annual plan after a monthly gym membership — and record who is interested. Outpero runs these as targeted bulk campaigns over customer segments, or triggers a call after a purchase or service event, and sends interested customers a link or a slot with your team.
* Time from the lead reaching Outpero to the first ring, under normal conditions. It depends on how quickly your lead source delivers the lead.

Why upsell and cross-sell calls breaks when people do it
Existing customers are the cheapest revenue most Indian businesses have, but nobody owns the call. Sales teams are measured on new acquisition, service teams on closing tickets, and the extended warranty or AMC offer goes out as an SMS that gets ignored. When a telecaller does work an upsell list, they cherry-pick the friendliest names and most of the segment is never called at all.
Step by step
How it works
- 01Export a segment from your CRM or billing system with the purchase history the offer depends on, or trigger calls via webhook after an event such as a delivery or a service visit.
- 02Write a short offer script for that segment, with price, validity and the one or two benefits that matter to it.
- 03The agent calls, checks the customer is happy with what they already have, and then presents the offer.
- 04Interested customers get a payment link or booking on WhatsApp, or a slot with a salesperson on the calendar.
- 05Objections and 'not now' reasons are captured as fields so the next campaign can be timed and worded better.

A sample upsell and cross-sell calls call
A scooter owner whose first service was done last week and whose warranty ends next month; offer: extended warranty. · Runs in Hindi with English words; shown here in English.
- Outpero AIHello, am I speaking with Meena Deshmukh? This is the AI assistant of Ganesh Motors. You had your scooter's first service with us last week. How did it go?
- CallerHonestly, not great. It took four hours, and nobody told me why.
- Outpero AII am sorry about that. I will pass this on to the service manager with your name and the date. Would you like him to call you?
- CallerYes, that would be good.
- Outpero AIDone, it is noted for the service manager. Is the scooter running fine now?
- CallerYes, the scooter is fine. Only the waiting was bad.
- Outpero AIGood to know. Your warranty ends next month, and there is an extended warranty offer this week. Would you like details, or should I call another time?
- CallerAfter this experience, not now. Maybe after he calls me.
- Outpero AIUnderstood, no problem. Shall I call you next week about the offer, after the service manager has spoken to you?
- CallerYes, call next week.
- Outpero AINoted. Thank you for the feedback, Meena ji.
Fields captured: satisfaction negative (long service wait, no explanation); scooter running fine; offer interest later; main objection service experience; follow-up call next week. Flag raised to the service manager to call back before the offer is repeated.

How the trigger reaches Outpero
| Where it comes from | How it gets to the agent |
|---|---|
| Dealer management system segment | Export owners whose warranty ends within a month or whose first service is done, as CSV with vehicle, date and offer, for a scheduled bulk campaign. |
| Service job-card closure | When a job card is closed in your workshop software, a webhook or Zapier or Make scenario sends the customer to Outpero for a feedback and offer call. |
| Billing or subscription system | For gyms and broadband, a webhook fires when a plan nears renewal or a usage threshold is hit, and Outpero calls with the upgrade offer. |
| E-commerce order history | A Shopify or WooCommerce order export, filtered to buyers of a related product, is uploaded as CSV or passed through Zapier for an accessory or refill offer. |
| Complaint ticket status | A helpdesk webhook marks customers with open complaints so they are removed from the offer list until the issue is resolved. |
Results go back out the same way: a webhook you provide, or a live spreadsheet or API call mid-call. WhatsApp messages and calendar bookings are opt-in per employee.

Run it well
What to track — and what goes wrong
| Track | How to read it |
|---|---|
| Offer interest split (yes, later, no) | A heavy later share means timing, not price, is the issue; shift the call to a better point in the customer's cycle. |
| Satisfaction answers before the offer | Negative answers cluster around a branch or a service step, which is more valuable to you than the upsell itself. |
| Objections by type | If price is the main objection, test a differently framed offer; if it is trust, address warranty terms in the script. |
| Payment links and callbacks booked | A good interest share with few links sent suggests the agent is not closing with a clear next step. |
- !Pitching before asking how the customer is doing. A sale offered to an unhappy customer loses both.
- !Keeping customers with open complaints on the offer list.
- !Writing a long offer. Keep price, validity and the one or two benefits that matter to this segment.
- !Calling the entire base with one script. Segment by what they bought and when.
High-ticket consultative upgrades, where the customer needs a detailed needs analysis, belong with a salesperson. If there is no offer worth a call, a WhatsApp message will do.
Questions people ask
Won't customers find upsell calls annoying?
+
They do when the offer is irrelevant or the call goes on too long. Keep each campaign to one offer that follows from what the customer already bought, open by checking on that purchase, and accept 'no' the first time. The agent records not-interested customers and anyone who asks not to be called again, so they can be excluded from future campaigns.
Can the agent offer different products to different customers?
+
Yes. Each row in the campaign CSV can carry its own fields — product owned, warranty end date, plan tier, last service date — and the agent uses them to decide what to say. Many businesses run one campaign per segment so the script stays short and relevant, rather than one script that tries to cover every possible offer.
Can the agent take payment on the call?
+
No card or UPI details are taken on the call. The agent sends a payment link on WhatsApp during or right after the call, and if your payment system reports back, a follow-up campaign calls only those who have not paid. Keeping payment in a link avoids reading card numbers aloud and gives the customer a written record of the offer.
Do DND rules apply to upsell calls to existing customers?
+
TRAI's TCCCP regulations treat promotional calls differently from service and transactional calls, and customers who have registered preferences on the DND (NCPR) registry can block promotional calls. Outpero screens DND numbers before a bulk campaign dials, calls from a DLT-registered line, and lets you set calling windows. Check with your compliance team whether a particular offer counts as promotional for your customers.
How should an upsell campaign be measured?
+
Look at accepted offers per 100 connected calls, revenue per campaign against its talk-time cost, and the share of customers who opt out. Because every call is recorded and summarised, you can also read the most common objections and adjust the offer or its timing. Comparing segments side by side usually shows quickly which offers are worth calling about and which belong in a WhatsApp message.
How much does an AI voice agent for upsell and cross-sell calls cost?
+
Outpero has no setup fee and no monthly base fee — you pay only for connected talk time, from ₹5 per minute (1 credit = ₹1, credits never expire), plus ₹649/month for a dedicated calling number. You pay only for the minutes the agent is actually talking. Prices exclude 18% GST.
