Should I use AI calling for existing customers or only new leads?
Start with new leads, where speed matters most and the customer has just asked to be contacted. Then add existing customers for routine, expected calls such as reminders, renewals and order confirmations. Be more careful with reactivation, complaints and anything touching an important relationship, where a person's judgement is worth more than automation.
New leads: the clearest case
A new lead has just filled a form or clicked an ad and expects contact. Calling within 30 seconds is welcome and the cost of a slow response is high. There is also less to lose: the customer has no history with you that a clumsy call could damage.
Existing customers: good for routine calls
- —Appointment, payment and renewal reminders
- —Order and delivery confirmations, including cash-on-delivery checks
- —Feedback and NPS surveys after a purchase or a service visit
- —Service reminders for vehicles, equipment or health check-ups
- —Welcome and onboarding calls to confirm a new customer got started
These are calls customers expect, with a clear and short purpose. They are also the calls that eat telecallers' time.
Be careful with these
- —Reactivating lapsed customers, who may have left because of a bad experience
- —Calls about complaints, refunds or disputes
- —High-value accounts whose owner knows them personally
- —Anyone who has asked not to be contacted, who must be removed from every list
Rules and respect
Existing customers have given you their number for a purpose. Check that the call fits what they agreed to, and honour DND and opt-out requests. For bulk campaigns, Outpero screens against DND, but your business remains responsible for the list and the consent behind it.
A sensible order
- 01New lead calling
- 02Reminders and confirmations to existing customers
- 03Surveys and onboarding
- 04Reactivation of dormant customers, with a small test first
Run each stage as a small test, read the transcripts and watch for complaints before widening it.
Existing customers also reward a light touch. Calling only when you have a real reason, such as a due date or a delivery, builds the habit of picking up your calls. Calling with a sales pitch every week teaches them to ignore you, whether the caller is a person or an AI.
Track opt-outs and complaints by customer group as you widen the scope, and pause any group where they rise.
