What is Call consent?

Call consent is a person's recorded permission for a business to call them, whether for commercial communication under TRAI rules or for processing their data, including recordings, under the DPDP Act.

Also called: calling consent, opt-in, recording consent

Under the TCCCP framework consent has to be explicit and verifiable, and it is what allows a business to contact someone about a specific matter even when their number is on the DND list. Under the DPDP Act consent is tied to a purpose, so a form that collects a number for a home-loan callback does not cover unrelated promotions. Recording consent is usually handled with a short disclosure at the start of the call that it may be recorded.

Why it matters

Consent is what separates a legitimate follow-up from unsolicited commercial communication, and it is the first thing examined when a complaint is filed. The simplest practice is to store the consent record — the form, timestamp and wording — with the lead itself. Outpero's instant lead calling is built around people who have just submitted an enquiry, which is the clearest consent case there is: they asked to be contacted.
