Should I tell customers it's an AI calling them?
Yes, tell customers they are speaking to an AI, ideally in the first line of the call. Disclosure costs very little, because most people care more about getting help than about who provides it, and it protects trust when someone works it out anyway. It is also the safer position while rules on AI calls and personal data in India continue to develop.
Why disclosure works better than disguise
An AI that pretends to be 'Priya from the sales team' will be caught sooner or later, by a question it cannot answer, an odd pause or a customer who simply asks. At that point the customer stops trusting the call and often the brand. An agent that says up front it is an AI assistant sets the right expectation, and people adjust: they speak clearly, ask direct questions and are less bothered by its limits.
How to disclose without killing the call
- —Keep it to one clause and move straight to the reason for the call: 'नमस्ते, मैं [brand] की AI assistant बोल रही हूँ — आपने अभी 3BHK के लिए enquiry की थी।' (Hello, I'm [brand]'s AI assistant — you just enquired about a 3BHK.)
- —Answer truthfully if asked. If a caller says 'are you a robot?', the agent should say yes and offer a call from a team member.
- —Lead with the customer's need, not the technology. People care that you are calling about their enquiry.
- —Offer a person. A line such as 'if you prefer, someone from our team will call you' makes disclosure feel like a choice rather than a brush-off.
- —Do the same on incoming calls. When the AI employee answers your business number, its greeting can say it is the business's AI assistant.
The regulatory angle
Rules aimed specifically at AI disclosure on business calls are still developing in India, but the direction is clear. TRAI's TCCCP regulations govern commercial calls, the DPDP Act 2023 sets expectations on how personal data from those calls is handled, and sector regulators such as RBI and IRDAI expect fair, non-misleading conduct towards customers. A disguised AI is hard to defend under any of them.
With Outpero you write the opening line yourself, so disclosure is a script decision you control. You can repeat it in the WhatsApp message the agent sends after the call.
Teams sometimes worry that saying 'AI' in the opening will raise hang-ups. The fix for that is a better opening and faster value in the first ten seconds, not hiding what the customer is talking to.

Follow-up questions
Does saying it's an AI reduce conversions?
+
It can cost a few early hang-ups, but there is no reliable public data showing a lasting drop, and the risk on the other side is larger: a customer who discovers a disguised AI later is unlikely to trust the brand again. Test it on your own leads by comparing qualified-lead numbers over a few weeks rather than reacting to the first day's hang-ups.
