What jobs should I not give to an AI voice agent?

Short answer

Do not give an AI voice agent calls where a mistake is expensive or the person is distressed: complaints and escalations, bereavement or medical-emergency calls, hard negotiations, final-stage closing on big-ticket sales, aggressive debt recovery, or anything needing a licensed professional's advice. Avoid cold-calling people who never asked to hear from you. Keep the agent on structured, repeatable conversations where a person can follow up.

Jobs to keep with people

  • —Complaints and escalations. An angry customer wants to be heard by someone with authority to fix things. The agent can take details; it should not be the last word.
  • —Sensitive health conversations. Confirming an IVF clinic appointment is fine. Discussing test results, a failed cycle or a diagnosis is not.
  • —Negotiation. Discounts on a ₹1.2 crore villa, a payment plan on an overdue loan, renewal terms for a large B2B client: these need a person who can trade.
  • —Final closing on high-value sales. The agent can qualify and book the site visit; a person closes.
  • —Regulated advice. Insurance suitability, investment recommendations under SEBI rules, legal or medical advice belong with licensed people.
  • —Hard collections. Reminders are fine; pressure is not. RBI's fair-practice expectations on recovery conduct make an aggressive automated caller a liability.
  • —Unconsented cold calling. Calling bought lists annoys people and invites DND complaints, whoever dials.

Grey areas

Some jobs work with guardrails. Renewal reminders can go to the agent if the script stops at 'would you like someone to discuss options?'. Feedback surveys work until a customer starts a complaint, at which point the agent should log it and promise a human callback. Recruitment screening works for availability and notice period, less well for judging a candidate's fit.

Voice broadcast is its own case. A fixed recorded message suits a holiday-closure notice or a festive offer to existing customers. It is the wrong tool for anything that invites questions, because the listener cannot reply.

A test for any new job

Ask: if the agent gets this call wrong, what is the worst outcome, and how fast could a person fix it? If the answer is a rescheduled appointment, go ahead. If it is a lost ₹10 lakh customer or a regulatory complaint, keep a person on it and let the agent do the preparation around it.

Follow-up questions

Can an AI voice agent handle emotional customers?

+

It can stay polite and calm, but it cannot genuinely empathise or make judgement calls about what an upset person needs. The safe design is for the agent to recognise distress or anger, acknowledge it briefly, record the details and promise a call from a named person. Outpero tags sentiment on every call, so these can be picked up by your team the same day.
