How do customers react to AI phone calls?

Short answer

Customers react to AI phone calls mostly based on whether the call is quick and useful, not on whether it is an AI. A call that arrives seconds after they filled a form, speaks their language and answers their question tends to go fine. Reactions turn negative when the agent is slow to respond, repeats itself, cannot handle a question or calls someone who never asked to be contacted.

What shapes the reaction

There is no reliable India-wide survey of how people feel about AI calls, so be wary of anyone quoting one. What call recordings show is more practical: people judge a call in its first few seconds on three things. Did I expect this call, does it sound natural, and is it getting to the point?

  • —Expectation. Someone who just submitted a Meta lead ad or a website form for a 2BHK in Kondapur expects a call. A cold call to a bought list gets a cold reception whether a person or a machine makes it.
  • —Speed of reply. Long pauses are what make an AI sound like a machine. Outpero's end-to-end latency is 0.8 to 1.3 seconds on average from when the caller stops to when the agent speaks, which keeps the conversation from feeling stilted.
  • —Language. A Telugu-speaking customer who drifts into English mid-sentence needs an agent that follows. Outpero switches to English when the caller does, in the same voice, across Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada and Malayalam.
  • —Usefulness. If the agent can give the price, book the site visit or confirm the order, most people stay on. If it says 'someone will call you back' to everything, they feel their time was wasted.

Common negative reactions

Some people hang up the moment they suspect a machine. Some test it with off-script questions. Some ask directly whether they are talking to a robot. Older customers and people on weak rural connections can find it harder. Each of these is a design problem rather than a reason to avoid AI: honest disclosure, a short opening, a clear promise of a human callback and a good knowledge base handle most of them.

Recorded broadcast messages get a different reaction again. A fixed announcement played to a list is not a conversation, and people treat it like an advert. It suits short alerts and offers to existing customers, not first contact with a new lead.

How to read your own customers

Do not guess. Listen to the first fifty recordings, read the sentiment tags and note where people drop off. If most hang-ups happen during the opening line, fix the opening. If they happen after one particular question, the agent needs better information at that point.

Follow-up questions

Do customers get angry when they realise it is an AI?

+

A minority do, especially if they feel tricked. Anger is far more common when an AI pretends to be human and is caught out than when it introduces itself honestly. Offering a human callback to anyone who asks, and making sure that callback actually happens quickly, removes most of the frustration people express about automated calls.
