Tamil AI Receptionist for Clinics and Hospitals
A Tamil AI receptionist answers your clinic's phone in spoken Tamil, books and reschedules appointments against the doctor's calendar, reminds patients, takes messages after hours and hands anything clinical or urgent to your staff. It never diagnoses or advises on treatment. Outpero speaks Tamil among seven languages, follows a patient who switches to English mid-sentence, and starts at ₹5 a connected minute before GST.
What a Tamil AI receptionist does on a clinic's phone
A clinic phone in Tamil Nadu rings for a small set of reasons, and most of them are routine. A Tamil AI receptionist handles the routine ones in the patient's own language so that your front-desk staff can look after the people standing in front of them.
- —Booking a new appointment: which doctor, which day, which slot, and the patient's name and mobile number.
- —Rescheduling or cancelling, which saves the slot for someone else.
- —Directions and timings: where the clinic is, when the doctor sits and whether Sunday is open.
- —Fee and service questions that you have given the agent the answers to.
- —After-hours calls, when nobody is at the desk, captured with a message and a preferred call-back time.
- —Outbound reminders the day before an appointment, and recovery calls after a no-show.
Outpero's AI employee does all of these on one product: inbound calls on your business number, appointment reminders from a list, and instant calls to people who filled an enquiry form. Calls are answered around the clock, and returning callers are recognised so that the agent picks up from the last conversation instead of starting over.
A Chennai clinic's day, call by call
The table follows one imagined general clinic in a Chennai neighbourhood such as T. Nagar, Adyar, Anna Nagar or Velachery. It is an illustration of how the work divides between the agent and your staff, not a record of a real clinic.
| Time | Call | What the agent does | When a person steps in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7.30 am | A working patient asks for an evening slot | Offers two slots, books one, confirms by repeating name and time | Not needed |
| 10.15 am | A caller asks where the clinic is | Gives the area and landmark, offers to send the location on WhatsApp | Not needed |
| 12.40 pm | A patient wants to move tomorrow's appointment | Cancels the old slot and books a new one | Not needed |
| 3.00 pm | A son calls about his father's chest pain | Tells the caller to go to the nearest emergency department or call the ambulance number, 108, and flags the call to staff | Immediately; your team calls back |
| 6.45 pm | A caller asks which medicine to take for a fever | Explains that it cannot advise on medicines and offers a doctor's appointment | A nurse or doctor, if the caller insists |
| 9.20 pm | A new patient rings after closing | Books the next morning's slot and logs the call | Not needed |
| Next morning | Reminders to the day's patients | Calls each one to confirm or reschedule | Staff review the unconfirmed list |
The Tamil that callers actually use
Spoken Tamil on a phone is not the Tamil of a textbook. People say naan varen, not naan varugiren, drop endings, and drop English words into the middle of a sentence. Chennai callers say appointment, doctor, report and scan in English with Tamil endings; Coimbatore callers often speak a slightly different rhythm. This is Tanglish, and a receptionist that cannot follow it will lose the caller on the first turn.
- —Names and initials. Tamil names often carry the father's or village's initial before the given name, as in S. Murugan or R. Lakshmi. The agent should capture the initial and read the name back to confirm.
- —Respect. Sir and madam are safe for adults; ஐயா and அம்மா suit older callers in many places. Use the respectful plural forms, never the casual ones.
- —Time and numbers. Tamil callers say times in several ways, such as காலைல பத்து மணி or ten o'clock. The agent should confirm the final slot in one clear sentence.
- —Mixed sentences. A patient may start in Tamil and finish in English. The agent follows in the same voice, without restarting.
Sample lines for a Tamil clinic receptionist
These are short, realistic lines, in Tamil script with English words mixed in as a caller would say them, each followed by an English translation. Replace the bracketed parts with your clinic's details.

The medical-advice line
Want to hear this working, not just read about it?
The most important rule in a clinic is what the agent must not do. It must not diagnose, suggest or change a medicine, interpret a report or judge urgency from symptoms. It can book, remind, give directions and take a message. It should tell the caller plainly that it is an AI assistant.
Write this into the instructions: for any symptom question, offer a doctor's appointment; for words such as chest pain, breathlessness, bleeding, unconsciousness or severe pain, tell the caller to go to the nearest emergency department or call 108, and flag the call to your staff through a transfer or a webhook notification you set up. Outpero can transfer a call to your team when a person should take it. Do not promise a transfer for every call; decide in advance which calls are handed over and who answers.
Clinic or hospital: what changes
- —A single-doctor clinic has one calendar and a short list of questions. One AI employee can run it.
- —A multi-specialty hospital has departments, doctors and timings. Write the department list, the visiting hours and the extension or contact for each into the brief, and keep clinical triage with trained staff.
- —Concurrency. A channel is one call at a time on your number. A busy hospital may want extra channels, each ₹649 a month, added or removed any month.
- —Records. Diagnostic labs, dental clinics and fertility centres each have their own questions; give each its own agent and instructions.
What it costs, in rupees
There is no setup fee and no monthly subscription. You pay for connected talk time from prepaid credits, with Standard at ₹5 a minute and Premium at ₹6.8, plus ₹649 a month for a dedicated +91 number that includes 1 channel. Prices exclude 18% GST.
Take an illustration, not a quote. Suppose a clinic receives about 40 answered calls a day averaging two minutes, over 26 working days. That is 2,080 minutes, or ₹10,400 at Standard, plus ₹649 for the number, so ₹11,049 before GST. A human receptionist at the ₹18,000 reference salary works one shift and handles one call at a time; the agent works every hour and takes more than one call if you add channels. It does not replace the person who welcomes patients at the desk, which is why most clinics keep both.
Privacy and trust
Patient calls contain personal and health information. Tell callers they are speaking with an AI, record only what you need, restrict who can open recordings and transcripts, and follow the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 and your own consent practice. Do not read out one patient's details to another caller, and have the agent verify who is calling before it discusses an existing appointment.
A ten-call Tamil test before you go live
- 01Book an appointment in colloquial Tamil, then change the slot in the middle of the call.
- 02Say your name with an initial, such as S. Murugan, and check it is read back correctly.
- 03Switch to English halfway through a sentence and see whether the agent follows.
- 04Ask for the clinic's address and timings.
- 05Ask which tablet to take for a fever, and check it declines and offers an appointment.
- 06Say that someone has chest pain, and check the emergency response and that staff are flagged.
- 07Call after hours and check the message and the call-back time are logged.
- 08Interrupt the agent mid-sentence with a different question.
- 09Call twice from the same number to see how it handles a returning caller.
- 10Listen to the transcripts for every call, not just the summaries.
New Outpero accounts start with 50 free credits and no card, which covers these ten calls and a pilot week of real traffic.
Where it does not fit
A Tamil AI receptionist is the wrong tool when callers are mostly distressed patients needing clinical triage, when every enquiry must be handled by a person for regulatory reasons, or when your callers speak a language Outpero does not yet support, such as Bengali. It also does not manage the physical queue at your desk. For those parts of the job, staff remain essential.
Frequently asked questions
Can an AI receptionist speak Tamil on a clinic's phone?
+
Yes. Outpero's agent speaks colloquial Tamil and follows a switch into English mid-sentence, which covers Tanglish as callers use it in Chennai and Coimbatore. It answers your business number, books appointments and reminds patients. Always test it with real Tamil speech before you rely on it.
Can it book appointments for several doctors?
+
It can book a real slot in a calendar, so a clinic with several doctors can give each one a calendar and tell the agent which doctor handles which concern. Complex hospital triage should stay with trained staff. Write the doctors, days and timings into the brief and test each one.
What happens if a patient describes an emergency?
+
You configure the agent to tell the caller to go to the nearest emergency department or call 108, and to flag the call to your staff straight away. It must never judge urgency or give treatment advice. Decide in advance which calls are transferred to your team and who answers them.
Is it safe to record patient calls?
+
Recordings hold personal and health information. Tell callers they are speaking to an AI, keep only what you need, limit who can open recordings and follow the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 and your consent practice. Ask your lawyer for advice specific to your clinic.
How much does a Tamil AI receptionist cost?
+
There is no setup fee or monthly subscription. Standard is ₹5 and Premium ₹6.8 per connected minute from prepaid credits, plus ₹649 a month for a +91 business number including 1 channel. Extra channels are ₹649 a month each. All prices exclude 18% GST.
Will it replace my front-desk staff?
+
Not entirely. It answers calls, books and reminds in Tamil and works at night, but it cannot welcome a patient at the desk, manage a physical queue or give clinical advice. Most clinics use it so staff spend less time on the phone and more with the people in front of them.
