Does AI cold calling actually work in India?
It works for some jobs and not others. AI cold calling is good at reaching many people quickly, qualifying interest and booking a next step, at a fraction of a telecaller's cost, but cold lists convert far below warm leads and many numbers will not pick up. Results depend mostly on list quality, the offer, the opening line and compliance, so test a small batch first.
What AI does well on cold lists
- —Speed and reach: each Outpero channel works through about 55 dials an hour, so 3 channels cover roughly 1,000 dials in 6 hours.
- —Consistency: the same opening, the same qualifying questions, no bad days.
- —Language: calling in the person's own language, with English mixed in the way they speak, lifts engagement over an English-first script.
- —Records: every call is recorded and summarised, so you see which lines work.
What it cannot fix
A weak offer or a stale list still fails. Cold prospects have not asked to hear from you, so many hang up in the first few seconds, and pickup rates on old lists are low. AI lowers the cost of each attempt; it does not make an unwanted call wanted.
A simple cost check
Take 1,000 cold dials with a 40% connect rate and calls averaging 1.5 minutes. That is 600 connected minutes, which is ₹3,000 on the Standard voice or ₹4,080 on Premium, before 18% GST. Unanswered calls cost nothing. If 5% of connected calls turn into a booked demo, that is 20 demos for ₹3,000, or ₹150 each. The 5% here is an illustration, not a benchmark.
How to run a fair test
- 01Start with 300 to 500 numbers from one segment, not the whole database.
- 02Write a short opening that says who is calling and why in one sentence.
- 03Call during hours suited to the audience, with retries on unanswered numbers.
- 04Read 30 transcripts and refine the script before scaling.
- 05Compare cost per booked outcome, not cost per call.
Cold calling is also the most regulated kind of calling. DLT registration, number series and DND screening all apply, so check the compliance side before the campaign, not after.
A useful rule is to judge AI cold calling by cost per booked outcome against what your own telecallers deliver on the same list. If the AI books a demo for less than a person would, and without evenings or Sundays off, it is working, even when its conversion rate on cold numbers looks modest. If it books nothing after a few hundred calls, the usual culprits are the list and the offer, so change those before blaming the technology.
