Can AI voice agents call for EMI reminders?
Yes. Lenders and NBFCs can run AI voice agents that call borrowers before an EMI is due, confirm the amount and date, share a payment link on WhatsApp and record a promise-to-pay date. Outpero runs these as scheduled bulk campaigns inside your calling hours. The calls must follow RBI conduct rules for recovery: courteous language, no threats, and no disclosure of the debt to anyone but the borrower.
Pre-due reminders do most of the work
Many missed EMIs are not refusals. The borrower forgot, the salary came late, or the auto-debit bounced for insufficient balance. A short reminder call three days before the due date, and another on the day, catches many of these. It is far cheaper than chasing an account that has already slipped into early delinquency.
What a compliant EMI call sounds like
- 01The agent confirms it is speaking to the borrower before saying anything about the loan.
- 02It states the lender's name, the EMI amount and due date, and that the call is a reminder.
- 03It asks whether the payment will be made on time, and offers to send the payment link on WhatsApp.
- 04If the borrower needs time, it records the expected date and reason, without pressure.
- 05It closes politely, and the outcome flows to your collection system through a webhook or API.
RBI's directions on recovery agents and its Fair Practices Code require courteous contact at reasonable hours. Its August 2022 circular limits recovery calls to between 8 am and 7 pm, and bars intimidation, abusive language and contacting relatives or colleagues to embarrass the borrower. Whatever a human agent may not say, the AI agent must not say either.
Where a human should take over
Pre-due and early-bucket reminders suit automation well. Hardship conversations, restructuring requests, disputes about charges and anything heading toward legal action need a trained human. Brief the agent to recognise these, stop the reminder script and flag the case in the summary and webhook so a collections officer calls back. The full recording and transcript give your compliance team a record of every word said.
Languages and cost
Borrowers respond better in their own language. Outpero calls in Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and English, switching to English mid-sentence if the borrower does. Calls are billed per connected minute from ₹5, with as many calls at once as you have channels, so on a handful of channels a due list of a few thousand accounts can be worked in a day or two.

Follow-up questions
Can an AI agent call about overdue loans, not just pre-due EMIs?
+
It can, within the same RBI conduct rules that apply to human recovery agents, including the 8 am to 7 pm window, courteous language and no third-party disclosure. Many lenders keep AI for pre-due and early overdue buckets, where reminders work best, and leave later buckets, disputes and settlement discussions to trained collection staff.
