What questions should an AI agent ask to qualify a lead?
An AI agent should ask three to five questions that decide what happens next: what the person needs, when they need it, a budget or range, where they are, and whether they decide alone. Start with the easiest question, ask one per turn, and skip anything already known from the form. The answers should land in structured fields your team can sort and act on.
The core questions
Most qualification frameworks, BANT among them, boil down to need, timing, budget and authority. On a short phone call, add location for any business that delivers, visits or has branches. Skip anything that does not change what your team does next.
By industry
| Industry | Questions that matter |
|---|---|
| Real estate | BHK and budget, preferred localities, possession timeline, home loan needed |
| Coaching and education | Class or exam, preferred batch timing, online or offline, which centre |
| Loans and NBFCs | Amount needed, salaried or self-employed, monthly income range, city |
| Car and bike dealers | Model and variant, exchange vehicle, finance or cash, test drive date |
| Solar | Own house or rented, roof type, monthly electricity bill, DISCOM |
| Clinics | Concern, preferred doctor or branch, preferred day and time |
How to ask
- —Easy questions first. ‘Which area are you looking in?’ is easier than ‘What is your budget?’
- —Offer ranges for sensitive questions: ‘under ₹50 lakh, ₹50 lakh to ₹1 crore, or above?’
- —Do not ask what the form already captured; confirm it instead.
- —Accept ‘not sure yet’ as a valid answer and record it.
Turn answers into a decision
Write a simple rule your team agrees on: for example, budget within range and timeline under three months means hot, call today; one of the two means warm, nurture; neither means cold. A rule applied to structured answers beats a gut feeling from a transcript.
Questions to avoid
Leave out anything that feels like an interrogation on a first call: PAN or Aadhaar numbers, exact salary, family details, or bank account information. Those belong in a later, verified step with your team. Asking them early makes callers suspicious and hang up.
Each answer goes into a custom field you define, alongside the summary, sentiment and recording. The same fields go to your webhook and appear in the leads database, so you can filter hot leads and export them as CSV.

Follow-up questions
Should the AI agent ask about budget directly?
+
Yes, but with ranges and after an easier question or two. Many Indian buyers will not give an exact figure to an unknown caller, yet happily pick a band. A question like ‘roughly under ₹10 lakh or above?’ gets far more usable answers than ‘what is your budget?’ and still separates serious leads from browsers.
