Can AI handle a caller who switches between three languages?
Partly. Outpero's agent runs in one live language and follows the caller into English, so Hindi and English, or Tamil and English, are fine. A caller who also moves into a third language, such as Tamil in a Hindi call, may not be followed well. Split lists by language and transfer to a person where needed.
Why three-language callers exist
In Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai, plenty of people grow up with a home language, a city language and English. A call may begin in Hindi, shift to Telugu for a family word and end in English for a number. That is normal speech for them, and it is the hardest case for any voice agent.
What Outpero does well
Each Outpero agent is set up in one of the live languages, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada or Malayalam, and in each it moves to English the moment the caller does, mid-sentence and in the same voice. That covers the most common mix: a regional language plus English.
What it does not promise
- —Following a caller into a different live language, such as a Hindi agent facing a Kannada reply.
- —Understanding unsupported languages mixed into the call, such as Gujarati or Punjabi.
- —Matching a caller's mixed register word for word in every case.
Ways to handle three-language callers
- 01Segment by the caller's strongest language and run separate campaigns per language.
- 02Use English or Hindi as a common ground for unknown lists, and let the caller lead.
- 03Keep sentences short, so a switch mid-call does not lose context.
- 04Flag calls where a caller switched to a language the agent does not follow, and call those back with a person.
- 05Use transfer to your team where it is configured, for callers who ask for a person.
A realistic scenario
A Bengaluru apartment enquiry may come from a caller who speaks Tamil at home and Kannada with neighbours. If the lead form was in English, start the call in English or Kannada and see how the caller responds. If they reply in Tamil, move them to a Tamil campaign for the follow-up.
Because every call is recorded and transcribed, language mismatches show up fast. The price stays the same in every language, from ₹5 a connected minute.

Follow-up questions
Which language should the agent start in for a mixed city list?
+
Start in English or the most common language of your leads, with a short greeting, and let the caller lead. In every live language the agent follows a switch to English immediately. For another regional language, move the contact to a campaign in that language.
