What is AI calling and how does it work?
AI calling is the use of an AI voice agent to place or answer phone calls and hold a natural spoken conversation, instead of a person dialling and talking. The agent listens, understands, replies in a human-sounding voice and records the outcome. Outpero's AI employee does this in seven Indian languages, from ₹5 per connected minute, with no setup fee. Prices exclude 18% GST.
How one AI call works
- 01A call starts: either the agent dials a lead or contact, or a customer rings your business number.
- 02Speech recognition turns what the person says into text, including words mixed between languages, such as Hindi and English.
- 03A language model decides the reply from the instructions you wrote, your business details and what the caller has said so far.
- 04A voice engine speaks the reply. On Outpero, the gap between the caller finishing and the agent answering is 0.8 to 1.3 seconds on average.
- 05When the call ends, the recording, transcript, summary, sentiment and any fields you asked for are saved and sent to your webhook.
The loop repeats for every turn of the conversation, and the caller can interrupt at any point.
What AI calling is used for
- —Calling a new enquiry within 30 seconds of a Meta lead ad, website form or portal lead arriving.
- —Bulk campaigns to a CSV list, such as fee reminders, renewals or event invitations.
- —Answering inbound calls to your business number 24/7, qualifying the enquiry and booking appointments.
- —Confirming COD orders, collecting feedback and re-engaging old leads.
What it is not
AI calling is not an IVR menu, where the caller presses 1 or 2, and it is not a recorded robocall that plays one message and hangs up. Those are automated, but they cannot understand an answer. An AI voice agent can take a question it was never scripted for and reply sensibly, and it can transfer the call to your team when a person should take over.
What it costs and who it suits
Outpero charges only for connected talk time: ₹5 per minute on the Standard voice and ₹6.8 on Premium, from prepaid credits that never expire. A dedicated +91 number is ₹649/month and includes one channel, which is one call at a time. Signup includes 50 free credits, enough to test real calls.
It suits any business that makes or receives many routine calls in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam or Indian English: coaching institutes, clinics, real estate teams, D2C brands and lenders. It is a poor fit for long, relationship-heavy conversations where a person's judgement is the product.

Follow-up questions
Is AI calling the same as an IVR?
+
No. An IVR plays menus and reacts to key presses or a few fixed words. AI calling holds an open conversation: it understands free speech, follows the caller between Hindi and English, answers questions from your brief and records structured results. IVRs route calls; AI voice agents actually handle them.
