How do I choose the right language for each customer segment?
Choose by the language the customer used when they contacted you, then by state, then fall back to English or Hindi. Use the form language, the preferred-language field in your CRM or the last human call as the strongest signal. Split a list by language, run one agent per language, and compare completion rates in the dashboard.
Signals, from strongest to weakest
- 01The language the customer used with you before: an earlier call, a WhatsApp reply or a form filled in a regional script.
- 02A preferred-language field in your CRM or lead form.
- 03The campaign or ad that produced the lead, such as a Telugu Meta ad or a Tamil newspaper insert.
- 04The state or city on the lead. Hyderabad leans Telugu and Hindi, Chennai Tamil, Pune Marathi, Bengaluru Kannada and English, Kochi Malayalam.
- 05Phone number circle, as a last resort, because migrants and second-home buyers keep numbers from home.
Group the list before dialling
Outpero runs seven live languages: Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and Indian English. In each, the agent switches to English if the caller does. Add a language column to your CSV and split it into one file per language before uploading each as its own campaign.
| Segment | Suggested language |
|---|---|
| Hyderabad enquiry from a Telugu ad | Telugu |
| Hyderabad enquiry from a property portal, no language known | English or Hindi, switch if the caller leads |
| Chennai enquiry from a Tamil newspaper ad | Tamil |
| Pan-India list from a web form in English | English first, then Hindi for the north |
| Pune college leads | Marathi for local, English for out-of-state |
When the language is unknown
Do not guess boldly. Open in the likely language, but keep the first sentence short and let the caller reveal their language. The agent follows an English switch immediately. A caller who answers in a different regional language than the campaign is set to should be flagged in the transcript for a follow-up by a person or a second campaign.
Measure and adjust
After a week, compare calls by language in the dashboard: connected rate, average call length, and how many calls ended within 15 seconds. A language that loses callers early is the wrong choice for that segment or has a script problem. Fix the script before blaming the language.
Since the price is the same in every language, there is no cost reason to default to English. Pick the language that gets the call finished.

Follow-up questions
Is it better to start in English and let the caller switch?
+
For a mixed or unknown list, yes. Open in English or Hindi, keep the first line short, and let the caller reveal their preferred language. For a list where the language is known, such as a Telugu ad audience, start in that language, because callers respond better to their own.
