Do I need an AI voice agent or a chatbot?
Choose by where your customers are. If they call, or you need to reach people who do not read messages, you need an AI voice agent; if they already use your website or WhatsApp, a chatbot is cheaper and easier. Many businesses need both, because phone calls convert leads that text does not.
The core difference
A chatbot works inside a text channel the customer opens: your website, an app or WhatsApp. A voice agent works on the phone, and can start the conversation by calling. For Indian businesses, where many customers prefer to talk and many leads never reply to messages, this difference is large.
| Factor | Chatbot | AI voice agent |
|---|---|---|
| Channel | Website, app, WhatsApp | Phone calls |
| Who starts it | The customer, usually | Either; it can call a lead first |
| Reach | People who open the chat | Anyone with a phone number |
| Language | Typed, often in English | Spoken, in regional languages |
| Typical use | FAQs, order status, simple support | Lead follow-up, booking, reminders, answering calls |
| Cost | Usually lower per conversation | Per connected minute |
Choose a chatbot if
- —Most enquiries arrive through your website or WhatsApp.
- —Questions are short and factual.
- —Your customers are comfortable typing.
- —You have no phone-based sales or support to automate.
Choose a voice agent if
- —Leads come from forms and ads and must be reached quickly by phone.
- —Customers phone your business and you miss calls.
- —Customers prefer speaking in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil or another regional language.
- —You need appointments booked or payments reminded by call.
Using both
A common pattern is to let a chatbot answer simple website questions while a voice agent calls anyone who leaves a number. The voice agent can also send a WhatsApp message during or right after the call, with a brochure, location pin or payment link.
Outpero's view
Outpero is a voice product. It calls new enquiries within 30 seconds, answers inbound calls around the clock, and can send a WhatsApp message during or after a call. It does not replace a website chatbot. Calls cost ₹5 or ₹6.8 per connected minute, excluding 18% GST, with no setup fee.
Outpero publishes this page, so factor in that bias. If your customers never pick up and never call, a chatbot may well be enough.

Follow-up questions
Which has the better conversion for leads?
+
No honest figure applies to every business. Phone conversations tend to resolve questions faster than text, but results depend on lead quality, script and timing. Test both on a slice of your own leads and compare booked appointments, not messages sent.
