What is Endpointing?

Endpointing is deciding that a speaker has finished their utterance, so that the system can stop listening and start responding.

Also called: end-of-turn detection, end-of-utterance detection

The simplest approach waits for a fixed stretch of silence, typically a fraction of a second. A threshold that is too short cuts off someone who is pausing to think; one that is too long adds dead air to every single turn. Better systems combine silence with meaning, recognising that 'my budget is around…' is unfinished. Indian callers often pause mid-sentence and use fillers such as 'matlab' or 'ante', which a naive endpointer mistakes for the end.

Why it matters

Endpointing sits directly on latency, because every millisecond spent waiting to be sure is added to the response delay. Outpero's end-to-end latency of 0.8 to 1.3 seconds on average is measured from the moment the caller stops speaking to the moment the agent speaks, so the time spent deciding the caller has finished is part of that figure.
